But from a practical, ten-fingered human perspective, what benefit do they actually provide? I&#8217;ve yet to hear a single unambiguous answer. And that&#8217;s to say nothing of all the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3342453\/smartphone-upgrades-downgrades.html\">significant downsides and compromises<\/a> they require.<\/p>\n<p>At first, I assumed the foldable phone fad was similar to other questionable-benefit smartphone trends of the moment \u2014 counterproductive elements like &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3526431\/android-innovations.html\">waterfall displays<\/a>,&#8221; cutouts in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3401480\/smartphone-bezel-obsession.html\">active viewing areas of screens<\/a> in exchange for smaller borders around said panels, and heck, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3327556\/5g-2019.html\">even 5G<\/a> \u2014 in that it was ultimately conceived as a way to make appliance-like devices seem new, exciting, and meaningfully different from their predecessors (and thus suddenly worth buying at a time when most of us are content to stick with our current phones for increasingly long periods).<\/p>\n<p class=\"jumpTag\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3535333\/foldable-phones.html#jump\">To read this article in full, please click here<\/a><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ever since the first foldable phones were foisted upon us, I&#8217;ve been struggling to understand their purpose.
